PS3 Slim

This Christmas I got the latest version of the PS3, the PS3 Slim, and I have to say I'm really liking it.

I've been a PC gamer for years, usually playing RPG or RTS games with the occasional First Person game thrown in, and I haven't felt any sort of burning desire to get a console.  Sure a time or two when a new game came out that was console only I thought about getting an XBox or PS3, but I never really cared enough to pull the trigger.  I had a hard time justifying a console for a couple of reasons.

1. I had a perfectly good gaming PC, that I upgraded pretty regularly so why get a console too?
2. How much was I really going to play the console?  It would have to be setup on the main living room tv, would I get a chance to play it enough for the purchase to be worth it?
3. I hate spending money.  Well I do and I don't, once I decide to spend it, no problems, but deciding to spend it is a chore.

Then this last summer I changed my mind and decided I wanted to get a console system.  Why did I change my mind?  Well a few things. 

1. First the price drop on XBox and PS3.  Its a lot easier to stomach spending the money when its $300 vs $400 or so.   
2. A few games that were console only again came out and piqued my interest (UFC Undisputed, Infamous, and Batman (ok, not console only, but at least console first)). 
3. I've had some PC gaming troubles this past year that just ticked me off.  Most notably my GTA IV fiasco.

Ok so that started to sway me. So which console to get PS3 or XBox 360? (Note: Wii is off the table, we already have one).

Well I liked the XBox 360 alot, mainly because XBox Live was better than PS3, but honestly the more I thought about it the PS3 made a lot more sense. 

Why not the XBox?  When you think about it, XBox is really just a console version of a PC.  It essentially runs DirectX ,just like a PC.  The vast majority of the games on XBox come over to PC (or vice versa).  As a media center all the reviews say its loud.  And lastly, I was terrified of the red ring of death (a friend of mine has returned 3 different XBox consoles due to this). 

Why the PS3?  Well for starters it doesn't just do games, also does Blu-Ray.  Also reviews said it was much quieter than XBox.  To top it all off, the PS3 has more unique games for that I couldn't get on the PC.  Ok, PS3 it is!

Then, just when I had made up my mind and we were going to make the purchase I learned that the XBox could stream Netflix videos.  Hmm that changes things.  We have a LOT of DVD's, honestly too many.  I'm more than ready for the digital revolution, hell I'm already on that path with my use of Steam, and this XBox feature really interested me.

Crap now what do I do?  Well after hedging for a bit, PS3 announced that they were getting Netflix streaming as well!  Sweet done deal.  Santa I want a PS3 for Christmas.

Apparently I was a good boy this year, or Santa's intelligence network sucks not sure which, cuz I got my PS3!

So how is it?  I love it!  I'm playing NHL 10, UFC Undisputed, and GTA IV on it now.  Watching a number of Blu-Ray movies, and we've done some Netflix streaming.  All in all, I'm glad I finally got one and would recommend a PS3 to anyone that asks.
