Warhammer Online, the best game I'm not playing

By Arthur Correa • Author

So the funny thing is, when I started this blog I was certain that my gaming entries would be the most prevalent.  Apparently I couldn't have been more wrong.

At any rate I thought I'd take a stab at talking about Warhammer Online. Why? It was released about 4 months ago, why talk now?  Well I just loaded it up again and started playing it.  (I played for about two months when it launched then it kind of fell by the wayside).

First what do I like about it?  Well a lot of things actually

  1. The Realm based PVP Areas - I have so much fun doing this.  I love that you can have an area where you can do PVE if you want, but then when you want to do PVP you can just wander to another area and fight a fight with the other side.  The fact that you can have massive battles when you're trying to takeover a keep makes it even more fun.  The pure chaos gets a bit too much at times, but its what a huge battle would probably feel like.
  2. The PVP scenarios - This is actually where I spend most of my PVP time.  I almost always have myself queued up to go into an available PVP scenario.  They're quick, the maps are almost all fun (some not so much, but most are fun), and it drops you right back where you were so you can just pick up where you left off when you're done.
  3. The public quests where you race against the other ream - These are a lot of fun when you have an active race going on  Do I focus on the quest objectives?  Do I try to take out the other realms players?  Both end up being fun.  Even if you fail the objectives you can then try to keep the other Realm from completing the next stage just to mess with them.
  4. The quests for the most part are ok.  They're your typical MMO fair though, overall nothing tremendously new.  But they do have their moments.  For instance I just finished a mission in the Dark Elves area where I had to work my way up a Tower (I forget the name but it was in Chapter 14) and kill things along the way.  That was a really cool mission, and jumping off the top of the tower when I was done was great too!
  5. The graphics - I like em, its not a huge deal for me, but I still like my guy and all his armor.

So what have I played?  Well I've played a few classes

  1. Black Orc - Level 28 - I find this character a lot of fun.  I can do some damage, I can take some damage, and I get to be just pure destruction.  That being said I'm really looking forward to the Orc Choppa class.  I prefer DPS classes over tanks, but until now Greenskins didn't have a great DPS class.
  2. Squig Herder - Level 8 - I tried this, it being the DPS class for greenskins.  I don't know what I was doing wrong, but the DPS part wasn't so good.  I got sick of dying pretty quickly.
  3. Warrior Priest - Level 10 - Overall I liked him, I just got bored with the Empire questing areas more than anything else.
  4. Sorcerer - Level 19 - This character is a lot of fun because he is just so overpowered.  I know its not right, but it is so much fun to just blow stuff away completely.  Its tough in PVP you're such a target, but you can always get them back :).

So its a great game!  I have a lot of fun with it, but... I'm not playing it much at all.  I didn't touch it for about two months.  I played it a few days ago and I'm done with it again. Why?

Well I think the biggest things are

  1. The quests do get repetitive.  Sure they're fun at first, but after doing the upteenth "go kill this guy" quest, meh.  I'm sick of it.
  2. The leveling up became a grind for me.  My Black Orc feels like he's been stuck in a rut since he got to level 20.  I know they just something with an update to fix that, but I haven't seen any difference so far.  Couple that with the face that I'm in an area where I can get quests for him (Chapter 15), BUT I can't participate in that areas PVP scenarios.  So I'm a high enough level to be there, but not PVP.  That makes no sense, and really drives me nuts.  Like I said before I like to do PVE, and stay queued up for PVP all the time.  I can't do that here.  All I can do is just grind through the area.  Which gets very boring.
  3. My friends have all dropped it.  Whether for the latest WOW expansion, or for reasons 1 and 2 above, or just not having time.  My usually gaming group isn't playing, and this game is more fun with a group.  I'm in a guild, but its jut not the same as playing with some close friends.

So that's it.  I'm going to try to pick it up again for a while when the new Orc Choppa comes around ,but then I have to go through all the same Orc areas/quests that I've already done a bunch.  Is it really worth it
